Miles of Smiles

Friday Night was the annual Cub Scout Pinewood Derby. All four of our boys cut out, assembled, painted, and raced a car, with more or less help from WestBerry Dad.

The day leading up to the event was not smooth sailing" for many of the families involved...flat tires, lost cell phones, family drama.

I'd say race day was, however, a "smashing success" (no pun intended). The children had a wonderful time and, unlike years past, nobody cried.

The house was full of music and friends from around the world.

Consider It All Joy

James 1:2

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds,

New Living Translation (©2007)
Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy.

Generally when I write a blog post I've come to some sort of a conclusion or summary about events in our lives. Lately, I've been searching for a common theme or a life's lesson to "take away" from the dramas swirling around us.

I didn't write for awhile, not only because I couldn't find time, but I also couldn't find any inspiration.

But tonight I'm determined to be inspired...by mud.

This has been an exceptionally warm, wet winter. Where the ground would normally be frozen, we are parking in a great big, rutted up, messy, muddy driveway. The ground all around our house is saturated. The dog, the kids..we ALL step in it and track it into the house. Our shoes and boots are caked with dirt. I wash loads and loads of coats and school uniform pants.

Last weekend we were expecting company on Sunday. I spent the day vacuuming and scrubbing the floors. The company never came. Arguments followed late into the night.

Those same folks came by this week on Monday morning to take our children to a museum. They'd never been to our house before. And right before they arrived, the little ones went outside, rolled themselves in the mud, and then came back in, leaving black footprints from the back door, through the kitchen and living room, up the stairs, through the hallway, and into their rooms.

It was a major joy stealer.

Stress at work. Difficult family situations. Two house fires affecting our neighbors and friends. A dead lamb. A 4:00 a.m. call from my husband who ran out of gas on the way to work. An irresponsible tenant.

And mud. The Bible says that we are not only to "tolerate" and "be patient" through these situations but to consider them joy.

How can I? Really, how might I?

He challenges me to approach muddy messes, substance abuse, mental illness, deadlines, computer issues...with an attitude of love.

Losing My Marbles

I'm grateful that He restores us daily because I lost my sense of humor yesterday.

We found a lamb with a broken neck before school. I sent a boy on the bus bawling and left the lamb wrapped in a blanket on the couch to die.

My boss announced there'd be no raise for me and my bonus would be cut in half.

The boys were very naughty and needy at night. See photo.

This morning my oldest guzzled someone else's glass of milk as he is prone to do. He spit and sputtered and turned red.

It was good to start the day with a giggle. Maybe I will find my mojo today after all :)

Obedience

Pastor's message today was about obedience, following Luke Chapter 5 and the story of Jesus telling Peter to cast his nets into the sea.

Peter is a fisherman by trade. He is sure that the entire effort is a waste of time.

Instead, the nets overflow with fish. Jesus says to Peter, "You think this is pretty good...just wait and see! I will make you a fisher of men."

Amazing thing happen when we obey. When we listen to the small voice that encourages us to make one choice over another.

I'm still learning to be obedient instead of making assumptions about money or the use of my time.

Side note: today was my birthday. I'm sorry for the ugly tongue picture. It's bad form, I know. Grandma made me do it.:). It was my great pleasure to visit with her today.

Females

Generally speaking, our activities and our conversations surround "guy things" like football, engineering, or action films. More often than not, there are many, many more boys around here than girls.

Recently, my dear husband has been surrounded by women.

His grandmother passed away and he has been on the phone with his sisters making travel arrangements.

A childhood friend of his moved into our empty house. Yesterday he helped her move a mattress and tables. (Later, she and I went out for coffee. It was great fun).

Even the ewes need his attention more these days. The photo shows one Dorset very heavy with lamb.

I'm praying for Mr. WestberryDad now, as he travels across the state to attend a 2:00 service. I hope he knows how much I appreciate the way he takes care of us girls:)

The Birthday part II

I got to thinking this morning about the birthday thing and what I'd written.

I found the focus that I needed to raise my spirits....

My husband is loving and supportive every day, not just on "my special day." Just imagine if he were stingy with his affection throughout the year?

The boys give me gifts every day. J gives HUGE bear hugs, the run and jump type, each night when I come home from work.

N thinks to leave a little bit of dinner in the pan so that when I get home at 10:00 p.m. there is something delicious to microwave. He texted me a picture of his latest report card. Almost every grade was in the 90's or had improved. This while practicing for "Annie" nightly and lifting weights at school each morning.

W provides entertainment. Every day with him is "dinner and a show." (Smile)

J is the deep thinking intellectual. We discuss literature, romance, theater, movies, plays, and life.

It's like celebrating my birthday EVERY day!

The Birthday

It's my birthday this weekend.

There are a lot of things about birthdays I don't much care for, like heightened expectations and attention on ME. I do love that the day falls in February near Valentine's Day. What's not to like about roses, cut papers and intense chocolate desserts?!

So far the birthday weekend lineup includes two funerals, teacher conferences and sitting with the smallest children through a three hour choral concert. My husband will be five hours away at his grandma's funeral.

We were supposed to have friends for dinner. She, a musician, was planning to sing and play the autoharp for me. Mr. Westberry Dad would have prepared sesame scallops.

So maybe its a bit more difficult to keep my chin up this year.

It shouldn't be hard to remember that two families lost loved ones and I am still surrounded by my amazing, albeit messy, brood. Perhaps we'll treat ourselves to a movie or dinner out (food challenge?!).

I am too blessed to be stressed!
